Sony FE 16-35mm f2.8 GM review
Summary
Sony's FE 16-35mm f2.8 G Superior is a wide surg for e-mount mirrorless cameras, and corrected for use on full-couc bodies. It offers good to very good physics quality and a functional 2.2x roll which at 35mm almost reaches "normal" point length for comprehensive use. This means you'll follow swapping lenses inferior ofttimes than you would with more extreme ranges, the likes of a 12-24mm or 14-24mm. It besides offers a constant and bright f2.8 focal ratio in a package that is substantially protected against the elements and not too big or heavy - plus you can practice standard filters albeit of 82mm in diameter. What prevents this other than excellent lens from earning a Extremely Recommended though is its softer performance outside the inside image circle betwixt 24mm and 35mm central distance which is not eligible with the hefty price tag of well over 2000 EUR/USD. This weakness prevents the lens from achieving our summit rating. But the Sony FE 16-35mm f2.8 GM still easy deserves a Recommended.
Corrupt IT now!

Intro
Sony's FE 16-35mm f2.8 G Professional is an radical-bird's-eye zoom for its e-mount mirrorless cameras, and corrected for use connected full-frame bodies. Proclaimed in May 2017, it completed a '3' of Sony's G Master lenses with f2.8 focal ratios, joining the to begin with Atomic number 26 24-70mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8. The Iron 16-35mm f2.8 G also became Sony's second lens, after the FE 100-400mm GM, to boast a floating focus mechanism which shifts two groups of elements simultaneously. This should take into account the lens to delivery very high resolution throughout its focalization range, plane close-up, while besides reduction focus breathing. Both groups are also driven aside Train Drive SSMs for fast, serenity and still focal point. Finally, the front element has a fluorine coating, the body is weather-unopened, and there's a focalize hold button which privy comprise customized within the camera. Meanwhile, Nano AR finishing should minimize flare and ghosting.
To catch out whether the Sony FE 16-35mm f2.8 Gramme rightfully earns a recommendation I reliable IT on the 42MP Sony A7R Cardinal torso and compared it against the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 Di III. So if you're provision to get a uninterrupted f2.8 aperture wide-fish zoom lens for your brimful-framework Sony mirrorless body, you've come to the moral place!

Facts from the catalog
As was common I'll take a look at the technical data of the Sony FE 16-35mm f2.8 G ("Sony Gramme" for unmindful) first. I've rated the features with a [+] (or [++]), when it's better than average or even put forward of the art, a [0] if it's standard or just average out, and [-] if there's a disfavour. For comparison I use the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 Di Terzetto ("Tamron") and the Sony Atomic number 26 16-35mm f4.0 ZA OSS ("Sony ZA").
Size (diameter x length): 89 x 121mm (3.5 x 4.8in.) plus 23mm for the crystalline lens hood which is 107mm in diameter. Zooming back to 16mm central length extends the lens another 14mm to a total length of 158mm including lens hood. That's pretty long. The Tamron is much littler at 73 x 99mm + 25mm electron lens hood and does not change its length piece zooming. The Sony ZA is 78 x 99mm without lens hood. [0]
Weight: 680g (24.0 oz.) plus 31g for the lens thug. The Tamron is lighter at 420g + 22g crystalline lens cowling, the Sony ZA is 518g + 31g lense goon. [0]
Optics: 16 elements (including 2 peculiar dispersion and 5 aspherical elements) in 13 groups, a pretty complex design. The Tamron has 13/11 elements/groups similar to the Sony ZA (12/10). [+]

Nighest focus outstrip is 0.26m (10.2in.) with a magnification of 1:4.8 at 35mm central length using blue-collar focus. This is quite useful but you have a working outdistance of only 12cm (4.7in.). A magnification of 1:10 is achieved at 0.46m (1.5ft.) giving a working distance of 0.30m (1.0ft.) with lense hood attached. The Tamron goes down to 1:4.3 at 17mm focal length but has an even shorter workings distance of only 6cm. The Sony ZA achieves utmost magnification of 1:5.3 at 0.28m. [+]
Filter-thread: 82mm. The Tamron uses 67mm filters which are much small and cheaper. The Sony ZA has a 72mm filtrate-thread. [0]
Image stabilisation: The lens itself offers nobelium optical stabilization sportsmanlike like the Tamron. But modern Sony bodies provide built-in sensor-shift stabilisation over 5 axis. The Sony ZA has its own optical stabilization. [0]
Auto focus on: Yes. Manual-focus override is aside simply turning the focus ring. The focusing ring has a linear gearing with a throw of 140 degrees which allows for precise manual focus and smooth centerin pulling for videographers. The Sony G also has an extra focus hold button which can be custom-made within the camera. The Tamron has not-simple gearing. [+]
Covers congested frame or smaller. Same with the competition. [+]

Price: a whopping 2340 EUR (incl. 19% VAT) / 2200 USD. The Tamron is registered at fewer than half the price (1000 EUR / 900 USD) only then IT also has a little zoom-range. Meanwhile the Sony ZA with its f4.0 focal ratio costs 1050 EUR / 1350 USD. [0]
Comes with a nice padded lens showcase just without strap. The lens hood is included, correctable for transport, and has a lock to prevent it from accidentally falling off. The Sony ZA also has a nice lens pillow slip, the Tamron comes without pouch/strap. [+]
Aperture ring: No, just comparable the Tamron and Sony ZA. [0]
Sealing: yes, a rubber eyelet at the lens-mount plus further weather condition-sealing throughout the construction and fluorine coating on the front lens for easier cleaning. Similar to the Tamron and Sony ZA. [+]
The score in the "features-department" is 0[-]/6[0]/6[+]. The Lens has a very useful zoom-range at a constant f2.8 focal ratio and good weather sealing. The focus hold clitoris, lockable Lens hood, and nice lens case are wanted features too. On the other hand the lens also costs a pretty cent.
Two wide-angle zoom lenses

Alternatives
There is no claim match for the Sony FE 16-35mm f2.8 GM. You either have to pick a different zoom-range or go for a smaller focal ratio:
- Tamron has the 17-28mm f2.8 Di III from 2019 for 1000 EUR / 900 USD. Information technology's small, and white but gives up 20% reach on the long end: the Tamron's narrowest fish of view is 75 degrees versus 63 degrees of the Sony GM (see equivalence of coverage below). For more inside information have a look at my Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 Di Ternary review.
- If you don't necessitate a central ratio of f2.8 Sony besides offers the stabilized FE 16-35mm f4.0 ZA OSS selling for 1050 EUR / 1350 USD.
An ultra-wide angle telephoto lens might constitute an alternative if you can give aweigh some reach along the long terminate or simply complement it with a standard 24-70mm f2.8 zoom:
- The Sigma Art 14-24mm f2.8 DG DN is an master copy mirrorless design for E-mount which should soon be available (1530 EUR / 1400 USD). It is the largest (85x131mm) and heaviest (795g) alternative. This genus Lens is non to follow misguided for the Sigma Art 14-24mm f2.8 DG HSM, a DSLR aim from 2018 which is a great deal bulkier and heavier still.
- Go even wider with Sony's FE 12-24mm f4.0 GM from 2017 (1700 EUR/USD). The lens is 87x117mm and weighs 565g. For more information and sample images have a look at Gordon's Sony FE 12-24mm f4G review soh furthest.
With some radical-wide tilt zoom lenses you lose 11mm (30%) reach on the long end compared to the Sony GM. But for that you gain 7 degrees (Sigma 14-24mm) resp. 15 degrees (Sony 12-24mm) angle of view on the short end. And that spear carrier insurance coverage is very telescopic. Follow aware though that overdue to the bulbous front component some ultra-wide zooms cannot utilise standard filters.
Here is the angle of view that the Sony Fe 16-35mm f2.8 GM covers with its 2.2x soar up:

Focus and zoom
Pore accuracy and repeatability is critical to systematically garden truck sharp shots. Repeatability (the accuracy of focus on the like dependent after repeated focus-acquisition) of this lens at 35mm focal length is not so good: Reikan FoCal measured only 94.8% with a clear difference in resolution of about 10% with the lens striking the (focus-) denounce consistently better when coming from further away. See the shadowing 100% crops when focusing on the FoCal target at 1.6m distance:
![focus-variation_Sony16-35f2-8GM](https://www.cameralabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/focus-variation_Sony16-35f2-8GM.jpg 509w, https://www.cameralabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/focus-variation_Sony16-35f2-8GM-400x200.jpg 400w)
Along the left is a typical final result when the lens was coming from 10m focus distance, on the right when IT came from 0.8m. I also encountered this effect under real-life-time shooting conditions but it may personify a single problem of my copy. At 35mm focal length the lens focuses quickly in around 0.6 sec from infinity to 0.46m (1:10 exaggeration).
The zoom resound turns direct 65 degrees and has a 19mm wide rubber control surface with a sainted grip. It is not too sozzled and can be operated with one finger. The focussing telephone is 16mm wide and is placed at the front-end of the lens. It moves very smoothly and can easily be operated with combined digit.
![hero_Sony16-35f2-8GM_60446](https://www.cameralabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/hero_Sony16-35f2-8GM_60446-945x630.jpg 945w, https://www.cameralabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/hero_Sony16-35f2-8GM_60446-400x267.jpg 400w, https://www.cameralabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/hero_Sony16-35f2-8GM_60446-1920x1280.jpg 1920w, https://www.cameralabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/hero_Sony16-35f2-8GM_60446-945x630@2x.jpg 1890w, https://www.cameralabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/hero_Sony16-35f2-8GM_60446-400x267@2x.jpg 800w)
AF-operation of the Sony Gram is inaudible from the outside and when you record video with the intrinsical microphone. As you pull focus, you'll detect more or less focus snorting: the image becomes a dwarfish less magnified at closer focusing distances. When I adjusted the focus from infinity to 0.46m (1:10 magnification) at 35mm focal distance, I metric a 5% decrease in magnification. The Same trial run at 16mm focal duration did only develop a 2% decrease. So focus on breathing of the Sony GM might non be too vexation when recording video but the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 Di III has even less.
Following check out my quality results!
